What Happens During a Well Flow Test?

A functional well should release a steady and reliable flow of water at a predictable rate, but it is possible to run out of water if you use more water than your well can produce. To prevent this from happening, you might consider testing the flow rate of your water to determine whether it can produce enough for your daily water usage needs. This test is known as a well flow test, and it’s designed to check two key metrics.

What Happens During a Well Flow Test?

Before you schedule a well flow test, here’s what you can expect during this service:

  • We will check the sufficiency of your water supply. A well flow test will check the amount of water your well can provide per day and compare that to your typical water usage. If we find that your water usage exceeds the amount of water in your well per day, we might recommend ways to conserve water each day to prevent running out of well water.
  • We’ll verify that the pump and storage tank are working efficiently. During a well flow test, we can also test the amount of water that flows through a spigot in an hour to determine the flow from the well. If the average flow during the test is under three gallons per minute, then there is likely a problem with your pump. We can then inspect the pump and provide any necessary repairs to improve the flow from your well. This may also improve the water pressure in your home, too!
